Switch It Up! How To Break Through Exercise Plateaus
A consistent exercise routine is one of the healthiest habits for your body and mind, though it can be challenging for many people to maintain, or even begin. Aside from the usual suspects that can throw roadblocks your way (a busy schedule, lack of motivation, or fear of failure etc.), sometimes exercise repetition can simply begin to feel boring, monotonous, or pointless. Our team of in-home and virtual personal trainers at Nielsen Fitness is well versed in combatting these feelings. Our years of experience working with exercisers of all ages and levels has taught us many tricks to make workouts feel more enjoyable. Read on to learn a few of our favourites.
BUILD THE RIGHT HABITS
“Healthy lifestyles depend on forming crucial habits through the process of habit formation, emphasising the need to establish positive habits and break negative ones for lasting behaviour changes” (National Library of Medicine, 2024). That said, there is no one way to build a good habit. Everyone operates a little differently, and it’s important to take some time to understand your own manual. Many (well intentioned) folks may try to push their own routine your way, but what works for one person may not work for you. Our in-home personal trainers in Toronto, Collingwood, London, Hamilton, and Ottawa (and virtual personal trainers everywhere) usually start by helping clients create a list of goals, or asking them to describe their ideal level of fitness. We’ll then help you shave that outline down into one SMART — specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time bound — goal or habit. The key word here is relevant. If the goal you’re setting isn’t important and specific to you as an individual, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll feel strongly enough to put in the necessary work to achieve it.
BREAK THROUGH BOREDOM
Once a good habit is established, initial success begins to lose its shine and monotony can creep in. We grow bored with the same old routine and crave something new. This is where the switch up comes into play: rather than trading your workout for Netflix or doom-scrolling Instagram, try a training style that’s totally new. There are countless different movements and structures that hit the same training markers. Our in-home and virtual personal trainers can design a routine that keeps you on track with smart, progressive programming that doesn’t feel repetitive. We want your workouts to feel as fun as possible.
AVOID PLATEAUS
On top of the boredom factor, repeating the same old routine over and over again will lose effectiveness over time. Our bodies are incredible adaptors — it’s why humans are so incredible at survival — which means the same stress applied over and over will soon begin to feel normal. In the fitness world, this is known as a plateau. “Hitting a workout plateau is a common occurrence for fitness enthusiasts of all levels. Despite keeping up with your exercise program, you may notice that you’re not getting faster, increasing endurance, or building muscle. This may leave you feeling frustrated or even apathetic. Luckily, there are many ways to break past a workout plateau and continue to grow” (Healthline, 2022). “Shocking” your system by switching up your routine every day, week, or month (whatever you prefer) is a great way to fight plateau.
PLAY THE LONG GAME
Lastly, we want to keep you curious and interested in your body. The more you understand your own function, and the deeper your connection is with how your body feels, the more likely you are to not only maintain fitness, but notice when something is wrong. “The connection between the mind and body is strong and bidirectional. Mental and emotional states can directly impact our physical selves, and physical status and behaviours can affect our emotional wellness” (Psychology Today, 2025). Trying new modes of movement is an incredible way to get to know yourself, and this relationship is key to longevity.
