Statistics say that the average gym membership costs around $60, although we’re certain that number is higher here in Toronto or other places in the world such as .

Did you know that 67% of people with gym memberships never use them? Many of our clients come to us after trying out a commercial gym and deciding it wasn’t for them.

Read on for 4 reasons why you may not be seeing results at the gym – and what to do about it.

Why the gym Isn't Working

1. It's Intimidating

We’ve heard many times from clients that they’ve felt they didn’t measure up, or that the gym felt more like a fashion show or meat market than a place to get healthy and fit. Of course, not all gyms will feel this way, but some certainly do.

2. It's Crowded and Unpredictable

Gyms can be busy – to the point where you may not be able to access a particular piece of equipment or have enough space to feel comfortable doing your workout. Not a good feeling.

Some people can enjoy the ‘excitement’ of going to a gym for a while, but after time it can become a stressful rat race, not to mention often stinky.

Both men and women have told us that they like working with a private personal trainer, instead of working out in a gym – without prying eyes or judgment of any kind.

3. It's Tough to Get There

For many, it’s the going that’s the roadblock. Especially in the city, parking can be tough which adds to the challenge.

One client recently commented that he was saving $10 by not needing to pay for parking, and at least 30 minutes of time by working with us in his home instead of going to the gym. He then proceeded to speculate on the extra quality time he has in his life because he (actually) works out – and that is priceless!

If you drive, finding a spot to park is something you something you also subscribe to when you join a gym.

4. It's Hard to Get Results

Equipment sells memberships, but that doesn’t mean you’ll see results. Our biggest beef with commercial gyms is their reliance on machine-based exercises. These are not the most functional or effective. You’re much better off doing bodyweight exercises that do not isolate specific muscles and get everything working together the way they naturally should.

Another common trend we’re seeing in gyms is they are producing group “personal training” classes. But at the end of the day, these classes are not much different than a choreographed prefabricated fitness class.

What to Do About It

If you’ve been a member of a gym for a long time and are seeing limited success and/or not going at all, it may be time to consider another path.

To many, personal training feels too expensive. But the reality is, you won’t find a better bang for your fitness buck than an in-home workout with a trainer who knows their stuff. Our workouts are efficient and highly effective and – the best part – you don’t have to worry about getting there, what to wear, or competing for space with bulky gym rats.

We challenge you to do the math and see what your membership is costing you annually. We’d be willing to bet it would be enough to do one of our packages – especially if you enlisted a friend or two to join you.
