Finding the motivation to exercise can be tough, and traveling can make it even trickier. Holidays are meant for rest and relaxation, but that doesn’t mean you have to (or should) throw your fitness goals out the window anytime you go away.
By taking the time for physical activity during your trip, you’ll find yourself feeling better and with more energy – during and after your trip. We are big advocates for moving your body every day, even if only for 10 minutes.
We’ve shared our 5 best tips to stay fit while travelling, so you can fully enjoy your getaway, with healthy habits intact.
1. Find Ways to Get Moving
You don’t have to go to the gym – take a long sunrise (or sunset) walk along the beach every day, or commit to 30 minutes of swimming. Make it fun and part of the getaway. Your metabolism will thank you, and you’ll likely find you’re enjoying your time even more!
2. Try Something New
Even if it may seem cheesy, try out a resort fitness class, or venture out for a hike– even better if it’s something you’ve never done before. It might just be fun, and at the very least it will get you up off that lounge chair (and away from the bar!) for a little while.
3. Workout While You Brush
Use some of your favourite no-equipment movements in your hotel room. Even if it’s a set here or there (while you’re brushing your teeth perhaps?), it’s better than nothing. Think squats, wall sits, calf raises, push-ups, and planks. Just a few sets of these exercises in the morning and at night really make a world of difference – and they only take 5 minutes or less!
4. Stay Hydrated
Remember to drink water, especially since you may be spending more time outdoors – and in the sun – and your body requires more water in these conditions to combat dehydration. A good rule of thumb is to drink at least one glass/bottle of water for every alcoholic drink. Your body (and your head) will thank you.
5. B.Y.O.T. (Bring Your Own Trainer)
Why go it alone when you can continue to enjoy the support of your Nielsen Fitness personal trainer? Because we offer in-home and virtual workouts, you never have to miss a workout – whenever you may be. All you need is a device (even your phone will work) and internet access and you’ll be good to go. Take Action
The bottom line: doing something is better than doing nothing, as it maintains the pattern of taking action, even if your workouts aren’t as long or intense. And having the support of a personal trainer – no matter where you are – makes all the difference.
